Amy Carmichael, founder and co-worker of the Dohnavur Fellowship in South India, was an instrument chosen of the Lord from her teenage years. The vivacious eldest of a large, Christ-centred family in Ireland, she was impressed at an early age that "nothing is important but that which is eternal." This understanding proved to be a foundation of her service to the Lord among the mill workers of Ireland, the Japanese briefly, and in India. She began her ministry in India in 1895 and never left the country. Until her death in 1951 she served the Lord in two main phases. The first was her rescue work with children in bondage to temple service. The second was the spiritual warfare she carried on after an accident drastically curtailed her physical activities. Her books written for and from experiences within the Dohnavur Fellowship, have comforted and challenged many, and reveal a life and work fully dedicated to the glory of God alone.
